Final survey

I completed the final survey and the course evaluation for IP&T 286, section 2.

Doing

I was able to talk to my husband (age 23) about a lot of the articles I read and videos I watched. I shared with him the list of suggestions that President Hinckley gives on how to protect our homes from the dangers of the internet. We talked about standards that we would like to have in our home. We discussed options like having an internet filter, keeping our computer in an open area, and being open with our kids about internet threats. We talked about pornography and how big the industry is in the world today. We hope to be able to teach our children, starting at a young age, to stay away from things that are addictive and that ruin families and relationships. I felt like the talk was very positive and that this was a subject that was good for us to talk about. We are expecting our first baby in August and it's getting time to start talking abou the things we would like to do as parents.

Watching Portion

1) I watched several videos and read articles on the Netsmartz, PBS, and I-Safe web-sites. It was very eye-opening to hear personal experiences of teens who had got into trouble on the internet.
2)I don't plan to assign my future students very many internet assignments, but if I do, I would assign them to be done with a parent. Most trouble that kids get into is because they are all alone and feel like no one is watching. The scary thing about the internet is that once it's on there, everyone can see it and it's really hard to remove. I hope I can help students be aware of the potential dangers on the internet and that they are real. I would like to encourage students to only get on the internet when they have a specific purpose and when they are around others.

Reading Portion

1) I chose to read "Leave it Alone" by Elder H. Burke Peterson (in the media category).
2) I specifically was impressed when Elder Ballard mentioned how being a parent and taking care of Heavenly Father's children is one of the most important stewardships we have here on earth. We are not just parents for a little while, we are parents forever. This was important to me and made me want to remember how important Heavenly Father's children are. I really want to take care of my children and keep them safe from all of the evils of the modern world.
3) I would like to follow President Hinckley's counsel that was on the Internet safety list. I think that list would be a good Family Home Evening activity to go over together as a family. I hope that I can talk to my children openly and help them be aware of the temptations that are too easily accessible on the internet and in the media.
4) It's hard to be in a situation among friends or family members where I feel uncomfortable with the movie being watched. I would like to try harder to have the courage to not particpate in media that is vulgar and violent and inappropriate. I think this will be hard, but maybe I can be an example for someone else.

TPACK Reflection

The technology used for our content-specific integration project includes video (digital recordings) and web-site collaboration.  The student-made videos will be posted on the course web-site for the whole class to benefit from. Pedagogy of the project is the student-to-student video instruction that gives the students the benefit of being a student and a teacher.  Students will be able to master concepts while they make the video lessons and view other student-made videos.   The content of the video lessons will be available to students as long as they are near a computer.  As they are learning to sew they will be able to access the course web-site and view techniques with video and voice instruction.  These asynchronous videos will benefit the student who need instruction when a teacher or peer is unavailable to help.

It seems that students learn things more effectively when they are the teachers. Our technology project allows students to be the teachers and describe a sewing technique to the class. After recording their "lesson" the students will be assigned to upload the movie to the course website allowing all students to access all instruction movies.

Idea for content specific technology integration project

This assignment will cover the Core Standard 20.00113-01. By identifying and using different sewing equiptment and recording a video the students will be able to access other videos and learn techniques from other students.
Ashley and I are going to assign our students specific things to do on a sewing machine. They will be required to perform these tasks and record a video of the task they are assigned. The assignments will be to 1) Identify dewing machine parts and functions, 2) Wind and place a bobbin, 3) Thread a sewing machine, 4) Clean, oil, and care of the machine, 5) Use a seam ripper and backstich a machine. For our project, Ashley and I are going to demonstrate and record how to wind and place a bobbin and how to thread a basic sewing machine.
We will turn in our video of the techniques that we demonstrate.

TPK vs. TPACK

TPK and TPACK are ways for using technology in the classroom. TPACK is used for more specific areas and topics where technology enhances the topic being taught. In my future classroom I hope to use TPACK to get my students more involved in the lessons. I might assign my students to submit their work in a Google Document or have them send an asynchronous video to me explaining what they learned while doing their homeowork. TPK is less interactive and might be a power-point or a computer presentation given as the lesson. Both I can see will be very helpful as a teacher and hopefully interesting for the students. It seems like kids know a lot about technology these days so it is useful to get them involved in ways that they enjoy.
